Apple will have to abandon the Lightning port, European parliamentarians have agreed on their position on the project: only USB-C must be used in Europe.
The time when the iPhone will have to switch to USB-C is getting closer. On April 20, 2022, European parliamentarians agreed on their position regarding the connection of our electronic devices: only USB-C must be used in Europe. The final negotiations between the European Parliament and the EU states can now begin.
As a reminder, in September 2021, a draft directive filed with the European Commission aims to impose universal and interoperable connectivity. In other words, Europe wants to impose USB Type-C everywhere. We are not only talking about smartphones, but also about helmets, listeners, cameras, speakers… and certainly keyboards or even mice. Note that Europe would make only one exception in this list, the reading lights could continue to use micro USB or something else.
See you mid-2024
An agreement could be reached this summer – if successful in the negotiations, the common charging cable would probably become a reality in the EU by mid-2024. On many points, the positions of the Member States of the European Union and the European Parliament are already very close. Both parties want USB-C to be used consistently.
According to them, a single standard for charging smartphones, laptops or headphones saves resources, avoids thousands of tons of electronic waste and is easy on consumers’ wallets, it was said. by Anna Cavazzini (member of Alliance 90/The Greens), MEP. A uniform standard will also have to be found for wireless charging by 2026, however Qi standard is already massively adopted by manufacturers.
